Snow swirled Snow Flakes

The other major component of the Snow Swirled stamp set are the snowflakes. There are three different sized snowflakes in the set so I used the two larger ones to create this card.

This is a card that didn't make it into the stamp a stack that I had in October. I thought it was a bit fiddly for a quick stamp a stack card. The fiddly bit comes in the fact that I had to stamp the image in versamark & then quickly colour in the tree in soft suede marker & the snow flake portions of it in pink pirouette before stamping it & then clear embossing it. It required a lot of quick work so that the embossing powder would still stick to the image.

Summer Mini Catalogue Launch

I have an open home for the launch of the new mini catalogue or the new Idea Book and Catalogue. This is an event over a couple of hours where you get to use product from the new catalogue. It is an informal "hands on" time where you get to create a couple of items & to get the new catalogue in your hands.

Stamping 411 Challenge #SSC223

I've had a bit of a holiday in sunny Fiji, no I wasn't on the Incentive Trip, it was just a lovely family holiday, so I've had a long time between blog posts. I was also unwell in the lead up to the trip so it really does seem a long time since I have done anything crafty. Hopefully I'll get back into the swing of things soon. I was really hoping that I would have a regular routine of updating happening by now but family & health comes first.

I made this card some time ago for the challenge, however I came down with a cold & then one thing led to another & before I knew it I was way too late to actually submit this card for the challenge. However the fact remains that the card was made based on the sketch below:

Here's my version. Hopefully for those from New Zealand you can see the likeness of this tree to the Pohutakawa tree, well that was my intent anyway. I'm really pleased that I have used yet another one of the trees from the Lovely as a Tree stamp set as a tree for a Christmas card.

Try Stampin' on Tuesday Challenge #33

This blog is another one that offers challenges & they are mostly sketch challenges.
The challenge issued this week was to create something based on this sketch

I took this sketch & then fiddled around a bit & admittedly added some extra DSP up the top of it but the inspiration was definitely from this sketch. I cut the hot air ballons from the DSP because I just can't see how else to use that sheet of DSP completely.

Yet again I'm not sure whether this will be a birthday card or not so there is no sentiment on the inside but I did tart it up with yet another hot air ballon.

Father's Day card #2

I went to the Auckland Big Day Out, last Saturday. It was a fantastic day of product training with stampin' Up! We got to play with a lot of new products from the Idea Book & we also had many demonstrators showing us their ideas on uses for some of those products.

One of the products I pre-ordered was the Bigz XL Petite Pocket Die for the Big Shot. I was pleased to have one of my fellow demonstrators show me what she had used the die for. She had many uses for it one of which is for a credit card sized gift card holder. Here is a link to her gift card holder. I used the same technique to create this card & gift card holder for my husband. My husband uses a tie pin when he wears his tie so I used an antique brad to create a tie pin.

I've been making father's day cards this week, using only product & stamps that are in the new Idea Book & Catalogue.

This card was inspired by a stamp set that I haven't bought, yet. The stamp set I'm thinking of is called Best Dad Ever & is on page 30 of the new Idea Book. The stamp set has a row of 5 ties so I decided to recreate this in paper.

I used the Beau Chateau paper to create the five ties.

This is a cute stamp set that I really enjoyed using. Yes some of the phrases on it are corny, but you don't have to use them if you don't want to. You can use the stampin' Write marker technique to just colour in the picture part of the rubber image or you could do what I did when I mounted the stamp set & cut the phrases off the main image & stick the phrase on the side of the wooden block. In saying that I did use two of the phrases on a couple of the cards below.

The "I stink you're sweet" phrase comes with that skunk image. I made this card as a valentine's card for my husband, he loves that kind of corny humour so it was just perfect for him.

That little chicken is part of the set. The actual phrase that goes with that stamp says "Happy bird-day!" I decided not to stamp that part & just use the chicken for this easter card.

This whale card does use the phrase that came with it "Get whale soon". I was playing with the sweet treat cups on this card. I made the card last year sometime, well before the change over of the catalogue & I can tell you that the water is still in that cup! The card is still bone dry, those cups are pretty neat really. They aren't retiring but even I was impressed that the water was still in them so I thought I would just shout that out to the world.

Here's another card made with just the image from this stamp set. The phrase on it says "You're a blast". I decided to not stamp that part & used a happy birthday instead.

Other images that I haven't used yet are a tea cup, a hippo, a sheep & a cat. Really this is a great set that doesn't have to have the corny phrasing used with it.

This is just one large stamp. It actually has words written in the cupcake part, that goes along the lines of "Dear Thankyou for the I like it a lot" That made it a great stamp for kids wrting thankyou letters but I used it to paper piece the cupcake on the following card.

I think that it is important to have at least one stamp set that has just greetings in it. Occasional Greetings was my favourite set for this purpose. As well as having the thank you, happy birthday it also had a Easter greeting, a Father's Day greeting, a Mother's day greeting, a couple of Christmas greetings, a greeting for the newly married, plus just a simple because you're my friend greeting. I thought this stamp set was great & covered nearly every event that needed to have a card sent. Here are a few of the projects I have made with this stamp set:

I have really enjoyed this stamp set, possibly because I have had a lot of children's birthday cards to make & they all seemed to love the Robots movie. I have to admit that all the cards I made did only use one of the robots but there are a couple of other robots in the stamp set. There is a broken robot which has a "get well soon" sentiment, & also a robot carrying a bunch of flowers with the sentiment "I'm sorry". I did use the binary stamp as a border on one of the cards. It is a great stamp if you have a computer programmer in your life, which I do.

Mojo Monday #200

We are back home again after having a couple of weeks down south in Wanaka & Invercargill. Unfortunately the skiing wasn't great, white out conditions most of the time. There was only one day of great skiing & that was Friday 22nd. I want to apologise for not being here in Christchurch for that class, but with the boys really wanting to get a decent day's skiing I felt it best to prolong my stay in Wanaka. Just as well really because it gave James his confidence back after he lost it in all the days of white out skiing. He was oozing with confidence after his day on Friday & came home exclaiming he did 29 jumps! We packed up & left on Saturday & I have to say that was good timing because as I am sitting here now it is snowing & we have at least 4 inches of snow lying around the house, incredible! All that cold & snowy weather is good for one thing & that's sitting in front of the fire creating.

This was the Mojo Monday sketch for this week (they are up to number 200).

Technique Thursday - Stampin' Write Markers Part 3

As you know by now, I just love the versatilty of Stampin' write markers. I have shown you that you can colour a rubber stamp in different colours & only stamp once, no double stamping, no trying to line the stamp up several times.

We can take that one step further & emboss that image. There are a couple of ways of doing this. The first way is just colouring the image on the stamp with the Stampin' Write markers, huffing on it & then stamping & immediately pouring embossing powder on the image & heating it with the heat tool. Yes that works, but personally I am more happy to use the alternative method.

The alternative method is to ink up your clean stamp in Versamark stamp off on to scratch paper. Take your Stampin' Write markers & colour the image directly on to the rubber. Huff on the stamp & then stamp. Pour on embossing powder & then heat with the heat tool. This is the method that I used on the number panel of the card below.

I used the Stampin' Write marker & scribbled on to a piece of plastic. I then used the blender pen to pick up the colour & coloured in the number 9 on the card. The good think about the embossing is that it provides a slightly raised outline so it makes colouring in a precise image easier.

To get the Melon Mambo coloured dots on the white card, I just ran the card through the Big Shot in the Polka Dots Embossing folder & then ran a brayer with Melon Mambo over the raised dots.

Technique Thursday - Stampin' Write Markers Part 2

I love my Stampin' Write markers, in fact I must love them more than ink because at least I have at least one of every colour of stampin' write markers, the same can't be said for my ink supplies. The beauty of the markers is of course that they can be used in place of ink, oh & of course we sell them individually now & that is cheaper than buying an individual ink pad.

Anyway back to what I was saying, which is you can use the markers directly on to a stamp. I've shown that technique in a previous blog post here. Now I am taking that same concept but changing it up slightly. You can use markers to make a stippled effect on a stamp. In the photo below (click to see it in a larger screen if need be) the middle flower (inked in Daffodil Delight) is the fully inked version of the stamp. Either side of it are a couple of flowers that have had the "stipple effect" applied to the exact same stamp. One to a lesser degree than the other.

The stipple effect is where you use your marker direct to the stamp but just make dots around the stamp instead of fully inking it. Remember to huff on it before stamping to moisten it slightly. The more dots you use the darker the stamped image will be. I used the retired Punched Posies hostess level 2 set for the stamp. The stamp has several lines as the image of the flower, so in one image I just used the stipple effect in between the outer two lines. In the other image I used the stipple effect in between the outer two lines plus the next two lines in. I think it gave the card a more unique look than if I had just stamped all three of those images in the same manner.

I never found the photos that I had of the birds nest that I thought I would scrap but I did find these two photos of the friendly fantail that pays us a visit from time to time. My son called it Sushi, I don't know why, I sometimes can't figure out what is going on inside my 9 year old's head.

Sushi first arrived not long after my mother died (James was 7 then) & both him & I took a real liking to that friendly little bird. It sits up on the wisteria chirping away & flitting around in that funny way that they do. I like to think it is my mother's spirit visiting & keeping a check on us. I think James must think something similar, but he called it Sushi. The fantail doesn't come everyday, just at certain times of the year, usually in autumn, but each time it comes James gets excited & still calls it Sushi. As the bird has a special place in James' & my heart I thought I had better do a scrapbook page on it.

Masculine 21st birthday card

Typically I left making this card until about an hour before I needed to be at the party. I was really stuck for ideas for this person. It was for my youngest cousin & as you can imagine with a 21 year age gap between us we don't really know each other all that well. It was hard enough trying to think of something to give him as a gift let alone a card.

So I looked about in Paper Plus for a card & found a really nice card for $10! My goodness for $10 it had to be a really nice card, but trust me that card wasn't nice enough for $10. What an outrageous price! What a fantastic thing that I know how to make cards, I just need some inspiration. So I carried on through the shop past the gift wrap, aha I need gift wrap & all the gift wrap we have at home is for young boys not 21 year olds. There was lots of pink, red, florals really nothing that said masculine until I saw a roll & the lightbulb went on. What's the saying? You know you are a Stampin' Up! demonstrator when..... you see colours & think ahh that is Chocolate Chip with Pacific Point, Kiwi Kiss and Bashful Blue.

Yes I switched the Kiwi Kiss for Wild Wasabi as I didn't even have scraps of Kiwi Kiss. Oh & there is no stamping on the outside at all, however I did stamp a Happy Birthday greeting on the inside but I was running late for the party by the time I had finished the card so no photo of the inside.

Technique Thursday - Faux Mother of Pearl

This card was one I demonstrated at the May workshop. It showed the faux mother of pearl technique. I found it hard to capture the shimmer on camera, but just picture the blue being kind of shimmery.

Non Stampin' Up!: Glad Wrap

The faux mother of pearl technique uses Frost White Shimmer Paint & a little bit of Glad Wrap. I shook my shimmer paint up & then took the lid off. Scrunch the Glad Wrap into a ball to use as a dauber. Then pick up the shimmer paint that is left inside the lid of the paint bottle & then wipe off the excess. Dab the paint on to the Whisper White cardstock. Leave it to dry then sponge over the colour that you would like. In my card I used Tempting Turquoise & Marina Mist. I then stamped my image with Jet Black Staz On ink.

I found out that to colour the sails I actually needed to have plain Whisper White cardstock underneath, so to really recreate this card you need to mask off an area before even shimmer painting. Leave the mask in place for the shimmer painting phase as well as the sponging colour phase. Then use the Stamp a ma jig to stamp the image in place of the mask. I was then able to use my blender pen to colour in the sails.

Technique Thursday - Stampin' Write Markers

Did you know that the Stampin' Write markers do more than colour in an image? They really are a very versatile tool to have in your selection of craft products. I used the Stampin' Write markers in a couple of different ways for the card below that I created for the Colour Inspiration Challenge at Stamping 411.

The use that I put these markers to time and again is in actually colouring the image on the rubber stamp. On intricate designs like this one from the Nature Walk stamp set it is a great way to colour an image that would normally be either too difficult or too time consuming to colour. In this case I used the Always Artichoke maker on the stem & the leaves & the Rose Red marker on the flowers. Then just huff on the stamp before stamping to moisten it up slightly.

The other use I put the Rose Red marker to was in colouring the edge of the Very Vanilla 1/4" grosgrain ribbon. It just makes that ribbon "pop" more. To do this I found the back of the ribbon, yes it does have a back. The back side is the side where the edge of the ribbon is raised. I coloured this side first then flipped it over & coloured the other side. Just think of how you can really put those two basic coloured ribbons (Whisper White & Very Vanilla) on to almost any project & have it co-ordinate perfectly using this technique.

Convention & Regional Swaps

Part of going to Regional Training or Convention is the swaps. Everyone gets together & we swap card fronts. It's a great way to get new ideas. I made the same type of swap for both Regional training & for Convention. I came across these awesome cards by Lorraine Castellon- Rowe Her's was made with fabric as the dress but I couldn't see why paper wouldn't work.

There was another colour way available at convention but they got swapped out very quickly, that colour way was Cherry Cobbler with Very Vanilla.
The Tangerine Tango one was my swap at Regional training, at the time the Island Oasis DSP was still available.

Earthquake Update

Hi everyone, My family & I are safe & well after the earthquake. It is very sad to see the devastation that has happened to the city.

Tuesday 22 February 12:51pm was a day & time I will never forget.

When the earthquake struck Scott was at work in the CBD & he walked out of his building unscathed only to see the Christchurch Anglican Cathedral have more of it collapse. He says it's a memory that he will never forget along with all the blood. After telling his building manager that he was alright he walked home via the boys' school.

Luckily for the boys it was lunctime when the earthquake struck so James was outside playing. Brent was inside in a stairwell & just clung on to the banister until the earthquake was over. The boys were then sheparded to a safe spot in the playground & they were allowed to sit with their brothers but mainly in their classes. Scott walked to their school & picked them up & then all 3 of them walked home.

I was at home when the earthquake struck. I had just sat down to eat my lunch & watch the last bit of Home & Away repeat. There was no warning rumble like there normally has been for an aftershock, just bang it was on. The electricity went off almost immediately which I thought strange. At first I thought oh yes here's another one, it's a bit bigger than we've been used to recently. Then it just got stronger so I was left thinking maybe I should stand under a door frame. The shaking still hadn't stopped & things were falling off the entertainment unit so I decided to dash under the door frame & then I just clung on to it. The hot water cupboard door flew open, things continued to fall off shelves & the front sliding door (which is quite heavy) managed to open itself. Once the shaking had stopped I decided to run & get my cell phone then bang the next after shock hit & I was once again under the door frame this time with tears pouring down my face. Luckily this aftershock didn't last as long & once I had stopped trembling I was able to try & phone Scott. I couldn't get through so then I tried dad but couldn't get him either. Then I decided to text Scott & about 10 minutes later I got a text from him to let me know he was alright.

My thoughts are with everyone that has been impacted by this earthquake in some way. I wish you all strength as you rebuild your lives, houses & the city.

Children's valentine card

I did make valentine's cards for the children, even though we don't normally celebrate Valentine's day. Brent, my elder son is in boarding at school so I thought he might like a card to open & then of course after making one child something I felt rather as though I had to make the other child the same thing. Both cards were the same however I made a change on one of the cards to have the owls around the other way.

I think this card has the owls around the wrong way but I am sure Brent will understand what it means anyway. I have dressed the "Brent owl" in his school uniform of grey with a white shirt & a blue, red & grey tie. So that Brent knew which one was me I dressed the other owl in pink pirouette & stamped the "I love stamps" stamp from the Totally Tess stamp set on the front. The little card is also from the Totally Tess stamp set & I punched the heart using the two step owl punch.

It's a grey cold day in Christchurch today so just to remember summer a bit here's a card I made. It's a very quick card but in making it I have had a flash of inspiration so I want to see if I can play more with this set later.
In the meantime, think of tropical islands, cocktails, nice warm balmy breezes under a couple of palm trees.

Hi everyone, I'm back in blogland. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas & New Year. The boys went back to school last week so I am now able to start spending more time on business & paper crafting. All this time away from it you would think that I would be full of ideas & would be itching to create but unfortunately my mojo seems to have left.

I do find a good place to start when I am mojo - less is by doing a sketch challenge. The following card is the first one I have made this year & it is a really simple one to just get me back into the swing of things.

My favourite blog to go to get a sketch to follow is Mojo Monday. They offer a different sketch each week that you can take & create your card with. This week's sketch was this:

I started making the square card with the white space at the bottom but then it took a life of it's own & I have rotated the sketch to come up with this quick & easy card using the So Happy for You sale-a-bration stamp set.

Friday December 3rd was the day that the whole school went on a picnic. The junior school went to Broad Park & had sandcastle competitions on the beach. It was a really hot sunny day but no boy was allowed near the water.

This event was on December 1st. It was the Middle School Carol Service. Brent had to borrow my clothes to play the role of a woman. The boys made Christingles which they gave out to the children in the church.

December Daily - 1st December

It has taken me awhile to get some time to sit & create the pages for this album. What with end of school year events & christmas functions & birthdays the last week has been a blur.

I'll say from the outset that this is not strictly chronological, we had so many Christmas/ End of year events that I wanted to record that actually not many of the dates correspond to the dates that the events happened. I wanted to capture them all, show the excitement of the end of a school year, as well as the excitement in the lead up to Christmas. I do often wonder if a Southern Hemisphere Christmas build up is busier than in the Northern Hemisphere. Down Under our schools are finishing for the year so there is a huge build up to that & then there is Christmas. What we don't have though is Thanksgiving so maybe one thing off sets the other.

So this is my page for the 1st December, however this particular event actually took place in November. It was the first christmas event of the year though so it does sort of count as being the 1st.
